What is the vehicle classification / regulatory category of Antic?

Micromobility vehicles aren’t covered by a single federal set of rules, so there’s no nationwide definition or classification system for them. Instead, each state and local government sets its own rules, which has resulted in slightly different definitions of what qualifies as a powered or electric scooter across the U.S. Always consult and follow your local laws/ordinances for your location.

For example, California law defines a “motorized scooter” as a two-wheeled device with handlebars that’s powered by an electric motor and designed to be ridden either standing on a floorboard or sitting with a seat and footrests. While the wording varies from state to state, more than 90% of states describe electric scooters as either standing or seated devices, and some also require that riders be able to stand on the floorboard or footrests while the scooter is in use.

From a manufacturer’s perspective, these differences can make things complicated. Designing one vehicle to meet dozens of slightly different state rules isn’t easy. To help bring consistency to the industry, the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) introduced the SAE J3194 standard in 2019. This standard creates a shared way to describe and classify powered micromobility vehicles, making it easier for manufacturers, regulators, and consumers to understand how these vehicles are designed and used. Under this system, powered micromobility vehicles are grouped into six categories based on their physical features

Antic, is powered by a lithium-ion battery and features a built-in seat, floorboards, foot pegs, and an integrated light for added visibility. Based on these characteristics, Antic qualifies as a two-wheeled, electric powered seated scooter and meets the definition of a motorized scooter under the laws adopted by most U.S. states.

Here are examples of other devices classified as “powered seated scooters”
